Miles Over Melanoma 2011
On May 7, 2011, Our M.O.M., Inc. was honored to host the Fourth Annual Miles Over Melanoma in St. Louis, MO. We are pleased to say it was another huge success. With the support of over 700 participants, volunteers and sponsors, we raised $45,000!
Volunteers arrived early and despite the hectic winds, we were well prepared for our participants who began arriving around nine o'clock. The pavilion was decorated with beautiful banners showcasing our amazing sponsors. We also displayed signs acknowledging many melanoma fighters, survivors, and angels. We really want to show our support for everyone impacted by melanoma. We hope this event is a great way to honor and remember your loved ones.
As usual the food, drink and music were all wonderful. We had entertainment for the kids, including a magician and balloon artist.
In addition to that, we had a wonderful guest of honor. Dr. Gerald Linette, medical oncologist and melanoma specialist, attended the event this year. We were also very proud to present the $50,000 we have donated since 2010 to the Melanoma Research Fund at the Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine. Dr. Linette, who was our mom's oncologist, will use the fund for research for an effective treatment and cure for melanoma.
The Prevent and Detect Booths were packed all day. We had sunscreen for everyone, and they used it! There were always people waiting to ask dermatologist Dr. Wayne Breer questions about suspicious spots on their skin, or what changes to look for on their skin.
We chose green shirts for the Board and Committee members this year in memory of Frank Malone, who was our loving Irish stepfather for more than 20 years. He was a loving husband to our mom, he was a big part of Our M.O.M., Inc., and we miss him dearly.
Thank you to our wonderful sponsors, volunteers, and participants for your continued support of our foundation and the fight against melanoma! This year we have outgrown Cliff Cave Park, so make sure you come see us at Queeny Park for the Fifth Annual Miles Over Melanoma on May 12, 2012!
